Can strategy games actually work on a touchscreen?
Strategy on mobile has a reputation problem, and honestly a lot of it is deserved. Cramming a desktop interface onto a phone screen creates misclicks and frustration.
The games that work, like Tideward Command, are designed for touch from the ground up. Big tap targets, clear turn summaries, and an undo button for fat-fingered moves make a huge difference.
Pacing matters too. Turn-based and slower real-time games survive the phone format because they don't demand rapid precise inputs. Fast micro-heavy strategy simply doesn't translate well to a thumb.
My takeaway after weeks of testing: judge a mobile strategy game by its worst menu, not its best screenshot. If navigating feels smooth during a stressful turn, you've found a keeper.
