Emberbound Saga
Emberbound Saga is the mobile RPG I keep recommending to people who think phone RPGs are all menus and waiting. The combat is turn-based but built around a positioning grid, so where you stand matters as much as which skill you use. Flanking enemies opens up bonus hits, and getting surrounded can end a fight fast.
The story surprised me. It opens small, with a broke mercenary crew taking a bad contract, and slowly widens into something about a kingdom running out of the magical fire that keeps its cities warm. Party banter happens during travel, and choices in side quests actually change who sticks around.
Progression is generous without being mindless. You spend skill points on branching trees, and respec is cheap enough that experimenting doesn't feel punished. I built one character three different ways over a weekend just to see what happened.
What we liked
- Grid combat that rewards smart positioning
- Writing with real character and stakes
- Flexible builds and cheap respecs
